Truly Spooky: The Age of Digital Fashion & Arts

This is how the bio reads of the latest sensation in the photography world of fashion - Jamie Beck, who is, really, a true artist.

Beck's images are so spooky, it's beyond being wonderfully amazing. It's unbelievable how digital art and cinematography is changing the way we see commercial photography. I can't stop looking at these images...

They even captured my favorite Bill Cunningham (New York Times street fashion photographer) at work. You can read my article about him here.

New York City-based photographer Jamie Beck, in collaboration with Kevin Burg, a web designer with a background in video and motion graphics, has truly elevated the art of animated GIFs. (See what I mean here.)

We feel there are many exciting applications for this type of moving image. There's movement in everything and by capturing that plus the great things about a still photograph you get to experience what a video has to offer without the time commitment a video requires. There's something magical about a still photograph -- a captured moment in time -- that can simultaneously exist outside the fraction of a second the shutter captures.

Well, the effect has been achieved! Thanks, Jamie! We've been experiencing quite a bit of fascinating movement in the still photos, which makes us both very uncomfortable - [in a good and weird sense of the word] - and very fascinated...I mean, the first time I saw it - I, literally, freaked out... It's rather disturbing to see someone looking back at your in the eyes from a photograph that's supposed to be still...

Beck put in the photography and isolated fluid motion in certain parts of an image to capture a moment of time, but also to un-freeze a still photograph by showing that moment's temporal movement. It's the process the involves still and video photography but editing is very manual and varies greatly from one to another so we're routinely solving new problems when creating them. In other words - such photography-videography is taking us back to being more hands-on the process of creating an image. Just as we became comfortable with the digital capabilities of our cameras, laptops, which do most of the work for us now - we are back to the 'dark room' of the photography that requires a bit more effort...and creativity.
