A Queer History of Fashion: From the Closet to the Catwalk

Image
I shall NOT miss it! And you shall NOT as well! Jenny Shimizu, Helmut Red campaign. Photograph by Mark Seliger. September 13, 2013 - January 4, 2014 FIT will be hosting  A Queer History of Fashion: From the Closet to the Catwalk exhibit, and you should NOT miss it! I've visited many events organized by the Museum at FIT and I've always found them fabulous (like the one about Daphne  Guinness  and/or the Shoe Obsession one)   as much as educational like The Designers & Books Fair 2012 and/or Desire Unlimited: The Cinema of Pedro Almodóvar ) You just can't go wrong with any of their exhibitions. They don't do them often, but if they do - they are always worth the attention. Last January I've joined FIT as a student , where I'm taking computer graphic design courses. I love the atmosphere of the school and often people-watch during the breaks. Everyone's so unique in the personal style. In the lobby of the school every so often the new wo...

One Day At The Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC

Image
Yesterday was my last class of the Spring semester at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), and until July, I'll be only visiting this place for the events, not the school. I'm actually looking forward to this summer schooling at FIT, and how could I not like coming to a place that looks, feels, smells and tastes like fashion and creativity?  And on my last day, I've decided to capture the 'atmosphere' of FIT - to show the many ways the students dress at FIT - the future faces of the fashion runaways:

Shoe Obsession: The shoes' exhibit to explore the effect on culture and design

Image
A couple of weeks ago I told you about the upcoming exhibit "Shoe Obsession" at the Museum at Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC that offers great fashion-related events every month, and most of which are free and only require a registration online to secure a free spot. I've been looking forward to this event for weeks, and was eager to 'get my hands on' the history of the shoe design and learn the 'concept, idea, and interest' behind the design of the shoes and boots that have been influencing our tastes in the shoe fashion and our choices for the footwear to wear for years. The truth is that no many fashionistas would admit that they have no knowledge in the subject matter they appreciate so much and choose to 'chase' after.

24 Shoes, 24 Places: And much more from Museum at FIT

Shoe Obsession exhibition and tour at Museum at FIT: F ebruary 8 through April 13, 2013. I keep telling you guys that if you live in New York - an ultimate city that offers everything for every interest: from great chefs and artists to fashion designers and financial moguls, you can never be bored. No one can possibly be ever bored in New York City - one of the reasons thousands of people come to the city every year to live, work and - most of the time, stay! This is why the rents are high, the restaurants - even with the thousands of them available - have waiting lists, the subway is over-crowded, and the museums charge entrance fees. [Unlike, say, most of the museums in Washington, DC that are free to the public!] So, you have no excuse saying that you are bored in the city and claim that you've seen and done it all, because it's absolutely impossible. Here's just a tiny portion of how you can acquint yourself with fashion, design and art, while meeting be...

Pulling A Brave Act: Exceptional Extravagance

Image
I took this picture at the Designers & Books Fair 2012 last month. It was a two-day event, during which the visitors could meet top designers, fashion/design magazine editors and book publishers up close and personal. [I love the F.I.T. events and try not to miss it, if I can!] These two ladies were hanging out in the book fair pavilion. I still don't know if they were the presenters - designers, writers, etc . - or the visitors. Either way, they've caught my attention, and, most likely, I wasn't the only one who has noticed them.

Learning From The Experiences: Graphic Design

Image
In continuation to my blog post about the first Designers & Books Fair 2012 in New York City that took place at the Fashion Institute of Technology on October 27 and 28, here's my posting about the sessions that involved some of the best graphic designers in U.S. who came to the fair to talk about their work and the books that have inspired them throughout the years.

Vogue Italia's Franca Sozzani Talks Fashion

Image
Yesterday I met the creative force behind one of the greatest versions of the Vogue magazines in the world - Vogue Italia . I've met Franca Sozzani , the Editor-in-Chief, who has been with Vogue Italia since 1988 and who came to the Museum at FIT to share her wisdom - [ you should have seen the line of people, some of which really looked like serious fashionistas, to the auditorium to meet with Sozzani! Good thing I've booked it way in advance! ] To say that this woman is brilliant is an understatement, she is beyond the visionary. She is also hilarious and is not afraid to push the envelope. Her bold statements in regards to how the fashion industry works and what goes into the production of one of the most prestigious fashion magazines in the world once again proved, why she's been considered one of the most controversial editors in the history of Vogue. She shared with us the things that most of the fashion industry players are afraid to say out-loud....

Fashion In The Films of Pedro Almodóvar: A Director's Creative Visionary

Image
One of the most successful and genius artistic collaborations between a director and an actor of all times is Pedro Almodovar and Pelenlope Cruz. Last week I've attended a rather interesting - [and, a fascinating for me] - lecture-presentation at the Museum at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) dedicated to the fashion in the films of Pedro  Almodóvar.

Get Fabulous Through Education

Image
I can't believe I'm so behind on some of the coolest and free fashion events that there are in New York City - the Museum at FIT events. Last time I was there was for the Daphne Guinness amazing exhibition of personal fashion collection, much of which was a dedication to her favorite Alexander McQueen.

We Love It Biking In NYC...

Image
Central Park Reservoir, NYC I'm loving how NYC became so bike friendly over the last few years that I have been away from the city. When I was leaving NYC, one could only spot take-out food guys on the bikes and casual biking crowds at the Central Park. There were hardly any other people biking in the city-city, while now - [to my greatest pleasant surprise] - so many people venture to bike on a daily basis in the city itself.

Fashion Runaways: From Paris to NYC, And Back...

Image
Thierry Mugler's Anniversary Show in 1995 Last week I told you about my visit to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) for Evolution of the Fashion Runways: A Photographer's Viewpoint ~ Maria Chandoha Valentino , a fashion runway photographer, who discussed her more than 20-year career on the runaways around the world. She shared her - inside - perspective on how it all started and the 'evolution' of the runaways shows through her personal experiences shooting runway shows in the top fashion capitals of the world. She talked how both the fashion and photography industries have dramatically changed over the years, and how the standards and expectations of both professionals behind the scenes and those of the designers' themselves can no longer satisfy even the most worldly - and 'have-it-seen-all' crowd - who back in the days were satisfied with a warehouse runaway, and now wanting more in terms of the 'performance' and 'presentatio...

Evolution of the Fashion Runways: Before They Were Famous

Image
Yesterday, The Fashion Institute of Technology - [aka FIT, as we - the regulars - call it] - held the event: Evolution of the Fashion Runways: A Photographer’s Viewpoint ~ Maria Chandoha Valentino. A fashion runway photographer - one of the veterans in this business - Maria Chandoha Valentino, came to share and discuss her career that has spanned more than two decades. From an insider’s perspective, she talked about her experiences shooting runway shows in the top fashion capitals of the world, and how both the fashion and photography industries have dramatically changed over the years. I was very reluctant to go to this event. I thought it'd be just 'another' lecture of "bla, bla, bla me, bla, bla, bla I'm doing these awesome things...", expecting just to get a few good points in regards to fashion runaways and then leave and go about my business...But, not only I ended up staying through the whole event, but I actually had quite a few questions to ask M...

The Great Designers: Part One

Mark your calendars, dear fashionistas and fashion costume historians!   November 29, 2011 - May 8, 2012 F.I.T. - The Fashion Institute of Technology presents The Great Designers: Part One.

Daphne Guinness: Her, Herself and Her Masters...

Image
The other day I attended a private tour of Daphne Guinness personal wardrobe exhibition at F.I.T. (Fashion Institute of Technology) in New York City, organized by a good friend of mine - Stephan Rabimov, founder and Editor-in-Chief for Depesha Magazine . [I'd say - if you have a chance to see it, SEE it! It will blow your mind away!]
